Rødhåd komt dit weekend terug naar Trouw met de lang verwachte DYSTOPIAN showcase. Samen met zijn labelvriend Recondite zal hij draaien tot in de vroege uurtjes.
Great that you’re coming back to Trouw on Saturday the 16th! Unfortunately I missed your performance on December the 22nd. I heard rave reviews, but how was it for you?
“My gig in Trouw was one of my personal highlights of 2012. From dinner at the restaurant to the impressive facilities to the soundsystem and the crowd: good, good memories! It’s a shame that we had to put the party to an end at 5 am. But I understand that there’s no curfew anymore. So this time…”
When it comes to describing you as a person, people call you sincere, melancholic, intense, impressive, deep. They say the same about your music! It seems Rødhåd and his music are one. Please tell us more about this symbiosis, this interaction between you and your music.
“It’s always hard for me to put my feelings into words. Music is the best way to express myself and tell my story. For me, it is kind of natural to feel the music, to surf on the waves of every record and to create an enduring, hypnotic mix.”
Berlin empowered and still empowers so many DJs. You’re one of the few who can truly say that Berlin is in his DNA. Does it really make a difference? Does it separate the boys from the men?
“I am really happy to live in Berlin. A lot of things have changed in the past 20 years or so. And now it feels like Berlin is the centre of the world. So many different people, so many opportunities. But, of course, when you’ve grown up here, especially in the last years of the GDR, you still have a lot of memories of that particular period. The world was different then. People from outside the city may not always understand what it means to be a ‘Berliner’, but that’s okay. They experience the city in their own way. So summing it up: I am a child of this grey metropolis and I learned to spin records here!”
Not so long ago music journalists called you a promising talent. Now they call you a quintessential DJ. Do you feel any pressure? And if so: how do you cope with it?
“Of course I feel some pressure. Things went fast these past few years, and it is important for me to evolve and carry on. Fortunately I get a lot of positive feedback, and strong support from my friends, my family, colleagues at work and the DYSTOPIAN-crew. But to be honest: I’m never 100% satisfied. There is this constant inducement to improve and to refine myself.”
You once told Resident Advisor that you like to play with the crowd. You’ve seen Trouw, you’ve seen its crowd: what can we expect from you this coming Saturday?
“Always hard to predict. I’d call it a journey through techno in all its facets. It’s a great opportunity to host our own labelnight at Trouw. With my buddy Recondite playing live, this probably will be a night to remember. In short: looking forward to party with you all!”
You’re the driving force behind DYSTOPIAN which, apart from a label, is seen as a creative platform. What’s on your wishlist for the near future?
“Back in 2009 DYSTOPIAN was just a party organized by me and two friends. But through the years it has become so much more than that. It’s indeed a platform for art, for creation in the broadest sense. A big step forward are the DYSTOPIAN-showcases which are taking place worldwide right now. And these past few months we’ve been working on special events in Berlin. Think ‘out of the techno-box’. It’s too early to lift the curtain, but surf to www.dystopian.de every now and then, and you will find out. In the meantime I do a lot of traveling while trying to focus on producing more music. There are great ideas for upcoming releases. Luckily the two friends I mentioned earlier are still taking care of so many things behind the scenes.”
3 records that will stick to you till the end of time…
“Haha… these 3 records, for sure: Gecko - Just Close Your Eyes. Staffan Linzatti - The World Ends With You. Aril Brikha - Groove la Chord.”
If you were to announce Recondite, what would you say?
“Well, I would say he is one of the greatest producers around. Or, using the words from his biography, his moniker tells you what to expect from his sounds and productions: cryptic and deep music with unfathomable and murky atmospheres, always with this seductive and melancholic melody."
