Seeing Sounds is een nieuwe filmavond over muziekcultuur.  Steeds staat een documentaire of film centraal die een sterke band heeft met een bepaalde stroming binnen (pop)muziek. Voor wie het luisteren alleen niet genoeg is, laat Seeing Sounds de geboortegrond, mode en omgeving van muziek zien. Iedere maand is weer een andere DJ present die zorgt voor een passende introductie & encore.

Op 18 maart vindt de eerste editie van Seeing Sounds plaats met de Downtown 81. Deze film speelt zich af op een cruciale plek en tijd: downtown New York in 1981,  het moment waarop de stad in een diepe crisis verkeert en kunstenaars en muzikanten zich vestigen in de verlaten panden van zuidelijk Manhattan. De film laat een dag uit het leven van een kunstenaar zien, gespeeld door de toen 19-jarige Basquiat. Later zou hij groot worden onder de vleugels van Andy Warhol, en vervolgens jong overlijden. Maar hier is hij nog de belofte, en is hij niet alleen kunstenaar, maar ook muzikant. De scheiding was nog niet zo strikt: veel kunstenaars speelden in bands en vice versa. Hiphop en punk overlapten in dezelfde scene. En dus hoor je in de soundtrack zowel Grand Master Flash als James White & the Blacks. Achteraf gezien heeft Downtown 81 precies dat moment vastgelegd waarop de underground muziekcultuur in New York op haar hoogtepunt was.

DJ Strange Boutique, ook wel bekend als My Little Underground,laat voor en na de film horen hoe Downtown 81 haar geïnspireerd heeft. Misschien was je in ‘81 nog niet eens geboren, maar veel van Downtown 81 is nog steeds relevant.

Met Leve de Leegstand maken we de ondoorzichtige wereld van de leegstand helder voor mensen met plannen, zonder contacten. In een serie interviews met krakers, oud krakers, antikrakers, vastgoedontwikkelaars, locatiescouts voor films en ambtenaren verkennen we deze wereld. Hierin worden de beweegredenen, manier van werken en de geschiedenis rond leegstand besproken.

Hay Schoolmeesters is afkomstig uit de kraakwereld, in de jaren tachtig heeft hij zijn sporen verdiend met de ontwikkeling van o.a. de Graansilo. Tegenwoordig verzorgt hij met zijn bedrijf Urban Resort goedkope ruimte voor creatieve mensen. Het Volkskrantgebouw is het bekendste voorbeeld van hun activiteiten.
Hij woont op het voormalige ADM terrein, een gekraakt gebouw waar eind jaren negentig veel om te doen is geweest.

Door het volgen van deze reeks kan je je eigen conclusies trekken over kraken, antikraken en leegstand. Maar ook je eigen plannen ten uitvoer brengen met de contacten en inspiratie die je tijdens deze avonden opgedaan hebt.

Ik ben Izaak van der Star en 21 jaar oud. Ik studeer Culturele Maatschappelijke Vorming aan de HvA en zit in mijn afstudeerfase. Binnen De Verdieping programmeer ik een filmreeks rondom het gebruik van groepen in Steden, daarnaast ben ik bezig met productiewerk. Van het huidige programma vind ik Visible Cities interessant. Het toont de laatste ontwikkelingen rondom gebruik van nieuwe media, zijn invloed op Individu, Stad en Maatschappij.

REVIEW Visible Cities #01

Perhaps it is time to say goodbye to all those rainy or sweaty days analysing public behaviour on the streets. While William H. Whyte already made the effort of using a time-lapsed camera in his urban survey’s back in the ‘80s there are still new technological methods emerging to engage with our surroundings.

You might not see it, but there is a constant flow of data surrounding you. Radio signals, Wi-Fi, telephone signals and magnetic fields are just only a few to mention. Euro Beinat of the Currentcity Foundation keeps track of all those telephone signals via telecom providers and transforms them in tera bits of data statistics. When they link this data back to their original physical location where the signals got picked up they speak of data-mapping. Such a data map represents a vast group of people passing through a certain location. While it is technically possible to track single users by their mobile phone (very hard, but the C.I.A can do it) this is not the occupancy of the Currentcity. Their focus lies on group behaviour. Euro Beinat showed images of the usage of the Rembrandtplein in Amsterdam during the day but also the lack of space usage in Amsterdam’s WTC business district in the weekends. While the results of certain of these data-maps are before hand quite predictable, the method certainly shows its accuracy.

Gathering data is a means and no end but it seems that the Currentcity started warming up in analysing and getting to the essence of their visualisations. How comprehensive and difficult they may seem to be, there are certain patterns. Examples as the rise in cell phone usage during certain events and where these usages where the most dense were shown, but these still remain on a well understandable level. It really got interesting when Euro Beinat started talking about monitoring human behaviour patterns in time and space. Tourist movement flows were shown and the commercial value of these data-flows were instantly apparent. Instead of just visual wallpaper, we’re talking about intelligence here. Not the kind of intelligence the C.I.A. spends millions for, but maybe even that won’t take that long.

It seemed to be that Euro Beinat is sitting on a golden egg but doesn’t know it yet. Predicting certain changes in urban flow and laying out usage patterns are very nice, but key to this development seems to me understanding a part of city life itself: public behaviour. Why do we move around the way we do? Why are certain places cool and other places dumpsters? Why do we always seem to take the same routes all over again? Many of these kind of questions have already been more or less answered by researchers, but those results have always regarded the individual as a starting point. This new way of looking to things through data might be able to let’s us learn of people behaviour in groups, what is called swarm behaviour with animals.

Besides this observing and analysing we can actually also intervene in the behaviour of people by interactive digital media. This was illustrated by Ronald Lenz of the Waag Society. Projects with game element using mobile devised passed the revenue. With the skill of expertise still broadening, from augmented reality to user generated content, he understands the value of interactive behaviour between surroundings and users. While the view on data by Euro Beinat seems to be quite Top Down, Ronald Lenz is using a Bottom Up approach. From groups back to the individual, active individuals that can leave their marks in the city. Instead by doing this in the physical old fashioned way of graffiti, these new users can leave their marks on the digital replication of the city. This digital layer is nothing new, but the possibilities of linking the digital layer and the physical layer are endless. Imagine a world where every object around you is somehow tagged and you can scan them with a mobile device. Instant info pops up: Specifications, costs, owners, age, comments or maybe even love notes. A certain filtering might be handy if you have more things to do than checking everybody’s marks and you only want to see your friend’s. But one key issue remaining in this approach is the element of probability. In a layer perfectly designed and organised how do we get in touch with the unknown? The unknown has been one of the main factors of creating desirability and curiosity in cities and do very well in cities. If I would be a great hacker I would certainly try to hack one of Ronald Lenz’ games and insert a huge green trolley crushing buildings and vehicles. This kind of reminds me on Sim City’s option to allow natural disasters to happen and other weird things like alien abductions.

The more people mingle in this group of new digital media the more interesting it gets. But besides smart programmers and city planners we also need random people picked out of the supermarket to tell us what they think they should benefit from it. Because creating something to use the creation as a end use in itself is overrated consumerism ideology dating back to the 19th century if you ask me. Nowadays people talk about added value, secondary use and more of the like. But what if we can finally learn how we really behave and respond on that, maybe its about building cities, houses, game design or the map for the quickest route planning in IKEA, we have to benefit from it on multiple levels.

We eindigen de reeks heel toepasselijk met ‘BRINGING DOWN A DICTATOR – a Force more Powerful‘, een documentaire van Steve York uit 2002 (56 min.) over de vreedzame opstand in 1999 tegen Slobodan Milošević, de toenmalige president van Servië die in 2006 overleed in zijn VN-cel in Scheveningen.

Hans Aarsman is fotograaf en geeft iedere week commentaar bij nieuwsfoto’s in een eigen rubriek (de Aarsman Collectie) in de kunstbijlage van de Volkskrant. Tijdens de laatste Great Dictators zal hij vertellen over zijn fascinatie voor het boek ‘Hitler and the Power of Aesthetics‘ uit 2003 over de invloed van Hitler’s esthetische opvattingen voor het nazisme.

René Glas, filmcriticus en promovendus aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam, doet al jaren onderzoek naar de World of Warcraft, een online computerspel met tientallen miljoen gebruikers over de hele wereld. Hij zal stilstaan bij het totalitaire karakter van deze game. De maker van het spel, het Amerikaanse bedrijf Blizzard Entertainment, oefent op alle mogelijke manier controle uit via o.a. virtuele politiemannen en spyware.

Hendrik-Jan Grievink, grafisch vormgever, doet onderzoek naar het gebruik en de betekenis van logo’s en iconen in onze (beeld)cultuur. Voor de slotaflevering van Great Dictators neemt hij ons mee op een reis om de wereld om te laten zien hoe de zwaar beladen swastika (als Nazi-symbool) vooral buiten Europa op grote schaal gebruikt wordt voor de decoratie van bijvoorbeeld cafés en alledaagse (design)objecten.

Metahaven: Vinca Kruk en Daniël van der Velden (Metahaven Design Research en adviserend onderzoeker Ontwerpen) deden onderzoek naar de symbolische waarde van het voormalige paleis van de Roemeense ex-dictator Ceauşescu in Boekarest, het zogenaamde Casa Poporului (Huis des Volks). Ze vertellen over de pogingen om een pervers machtssymbool te veranderen in een alleszins acceptabel ‘democratisch’ gebouw.

We eindigen de avond in stijl met Dictator-disco.

Een avond over het gebruik van kaartmateriaal als kunst en innovatieve vormen van ‘mapping’. In gesprek met kunstenaars, stedenbouwkundigen, creatieve cartografen en bewoners onderzoeken we de kansen die verschillende ‘mapping-technieken’ bieden en maken we onze eigen ‘mental maps’.

Viral Radio hosts Juha & Cinnaman

Vandaag viert Viral Radio zijn eenjarig bestaan in TrouwAmsterdam. Het afgelopen jaar kwamen artiesten uit de hele wereld voorbij op de eerste vrijdag van de maand: Kode9 & the Spaceape, Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Joker, Clark, Knalpot, Mala, Hudson Mohawke, Dimlite, Zwart Licht en Jamie Vex’d, en nog vele anderen.

Vanavond viert Viral Radio het begin van het tweede jaar met Rustie, Mike Slott en Loops Haunt. De avond wordt zoals altijd gehost door resident DJ’s Juha en Cinnaman. Voor de beatmakers onder jullie, vanaf 19.30 uur begint er een nieuwe editie van CDR in samenwerking met 08BAR. Producers krijgen 3 uur de tijd om een track van Mike Slott te remixen, waarna ze hem over het systeem van Trouw kunnen laten horen. Entrée is 2,50 euro, maar gratis met eigen beat. Je kunt dan automatisch blijven voor Viral Radio, dat om 23 uur begint. Normale entrée hiervoor is 12 euro.

This is a call for art projects that fit the topic of ‘the City as Interface’. Impakt Online invites artists, filmmakers, architects, urban planners, researchers, programmers and the like to submit their proposals for online projects that consider the city as interface, buildings as responsive surfaces, mobile phones as tools for playing and mapping, and technological traces as data for art and research. With the Impakt festival focusing on The Matrix City this year, Impakt Online 2010 offers a space to explore the City as Interface.

About the topic
In December 2009, the Institute of Network Cultures (INC) organized an event on Urban Screens in which artists, architects and theorists presented their research and design projects that regarded the city as a space of informatics, buildings as interactive surfaces, and mobile phones as pocketsize urban screens. With this call, Impakt Online wishes to build on this research and design practice, and collaborate with the INC, the International Urban Screens Association, VURB and De Verdieping on commissioning new works within this field of interest.

Engaging with changing conceptions, structures and practices of urban landscapes, the Impakt Online topic of “The City as Interface” works meaningfully with the Impakt festival’s overall theme of ‘Matrix City’. ‘Matrix City’ maps out the recent developments in this new urban landscape along two regularly intertwining lines. In ‘Universe in Universe’ the city is viewed as a gathering place of subcultures and communities, and ‘Media In Situ’ reflects on the city as an immersive audiovisual environment, as a modal structure in which virtual and real systems merge.

Impakt online will select and support a max. total of three online projects to be presented at Impakt.nl/online. In addition, applicants may also submit a proposal for a residency at Impakt headquarters in Utrecht, which includes a workspace and housing facilities for a period of two months.

Lang gelul over clubavonden is onzin, dus dat gaan we ook niet doen. De eerste zaterdag van de maand, die deze keer op 6 maart valt, is wederom van 360. Waar de scene tegenwoordig obsessief bezig is met het terughalen van oude sounds, is dit zeker niet het geval bij Patrice Bäumel en Nuno dos Santos. En zo ook niet bij de gast artiest van deze maand, Stimming, waarvan de producties door 360 Soundsystem als ‘radical, mindblowing and a feeling for emotion’ worden genoemd. Live optreden is dan ook wat Stimming komt doen, met voor- en achteraf dus Patrice Bäumel en Nuno dos Santos aka 360 Soundsystem.

De gretig beluisterde maandelijkse podcast van 360 is ook weer online, luister hier maart de maart editie. En als je er vorige maand ook bij was, dan kan je hieronder nog een korte compilatie bekijken van het optreden van Glitterbug (natuurlijk ook tof om te zien als je er niet bij was).
