The Warehouse universe

The Warehouse universe

15-05-2013 | 13.56

You have probably seen the Warehouse posters around: one great name in a cool location. On May 18, Warehouse invites Vakula to play in de Verdieping. We talked to Nick Verbakel, one half of Warehouse, about favourite his Vakula tracks, private partys in Amsterdam Noord and the universe.

What’s Warehouse?
Warehouse is a party. No difficult concept, just a quality club night for people that love electronic music, dancing and beer. The setting is important. It has to be intimate and it has to attract people that aren’t afraid to dance. We always give one exciting artist more time and space, more than your usual 1,5 hour sets. If one of the above isn’t possible, then we rather don’t do it. Warehouse is something Dion, the other half of Warehouse, and I do for fun and the night should reflect that.

Why Vakula?
We had already invited Vakula to Amsterdam four years ago, with the now-defunct collective The Universe. That took place in a small place at the NDSM dockyard, called Noorderlicht. There were about 30 visitors, including our girlfriends.. So a second round was long due (laughs).
But really, Vakula is such a good DJ. You just feel that he has such a vast knowledge of music, he lives and breathes music. Listen to his productions, too. Everything is warm, organic and danceable. Almost spiritual. House, afro beat, techno acid, jazz.. anything!

What’s your favourite Vakula track?
There’s more than one, but probably the most beautiful is Picture of You, released by Dekmantel. That track is so beautiful. There's a lot in there and you can keep on listening to it or keep on dancing to it. Closer to the end it even becomes sort of an anthem, really great. But I also have to mention (un)Orthodox Ambient. A very beautiful and experimental (improvised?) piece of music that he did under his alias Vedomir. Not necessarily something to dance to, more something to space to. This has also been released on Dekmantel by the way. And pssst, the voice on there is rumoured to be Nina Kraviz, before she got famous.

Warehouse will take place on May 18th. Nick will open the floor as Kennedy and then Vakula will take over. Upstairs James Holden will play all night long, which should leave enough time to go downstairs and dance!
