After I had seen Sven Väth a fare few times, I still didn’t know what to think of him. Sometimes he didn’t really add up to my expectations, but on several nights he just completely blew my mind. The past year he constantly filled my expectations though. Sven is, once again, exploring a new sound and even his blond coupe has popped out of its cocoon.
Papa Väth’s current tour, Metamorphosis, couldn’t wish for a better name. Maybe it’s me, but finally I know what is going on in Väth’s mind (oh that’s why he calls it Cocoon…). This doesn’t mean that I know his taste in music though. I don’t know a single dj, besides maybe Kees van Hondt or Optimo, who orientates in such a wide variation of music. Over the past thirty years, he collected about 10.000 records and every time he plays, it seems that he refills his record bag with totally different stuff.
In December last year, nearly everybody went crazy seeing Väth’s Boiler Room set. In the infamous sidechat, comments like ‘is this Sven??’ and ‘wow, he’s back!’ came by. This along with long thousands of ‘what happened to his hair’ remarks of course. For nearly two hours, a lot of great house tracks came by and the crowd went as crazy as when Âme and Dixon feathered up the Lloyd Hotel. Knowing that the Amsterdam crowd could make it even more extravagant, it’ll get pretty wild in Trouw. For the lucky ones that managed to get a ticket, make sure you get off on Monday, ‘cause it is going to be a crazy night.
