The LuckyMe girl

Eclair Fifi

The LuckyMe girl

26-02-2013 | 14.13

LuckyMe: the electronic music label from Glasgow co-founded by Warp Records artist Hudson Mohawke. Next to producers such as Machinedrum, Lunice, and Jacques Greene, the label also harbours Eclair Fifi, an art student at the Edinburgh College of Art who has no problem mixing a Drexciya track or an old Latin Freestyle track through her sets. When Clair Stirling (because that’s her name in real life) was only 16 years old, she hosted a pirate show on one of the very first online radio channels – “Interface”. But much more can be said about this “LuckyMe partyheater”...

For those not familiar with LuckyMe, the label does three things: music, art and parties. Because besides being a record label, LuckyMe is always present at international events such as the Edinburgh Festival and Sonar as well as various clubnights throughout the city of London. LuckyMe also harbours an artistic collective in the form of a visual art studio filled with alumni students of the Glasgow School of Art. LuckyMe has done assignments for companies in various branches: Nike, Red Bull, you name it. And although she states that she doesn’t have any "grown up clerical type duties" when it comes down to running the label, she DID design last year’s Baauer laser etch 12” 'Dum-Dum' visible on the right: a visual gem for the true vinyl lover.

When listening to Eclair Fifi’s sets, you should never ever try to pigeonhole her music. Because in all fairness: it’s impossible to label her with a particular genre. Her tracks range from very old to very new, from grime to Latin, from Kenny Larkin to A$AP Rocky and not to even mention the changes in BPM. It is eclectic, contemporary and probably so sweet because it seems like she doesn’t give a fuck about ‘the rules’. At least, closing off with Africa – Toto on the LuckyMe Sonar party beside Hudson Mohawke is something that takes guts. And we applaud her for that.

2013 looks like it’s going to be her year. Because besides the fact that Eclair Fifi is becoming an ever more prominent figure of the Scottish label, she is now also the host of the LuckyMe radio show on one of the most well known radio channels in London: Rinse FM. She consequently did a show with Ryan Hemsworth, a Valentine’s day special with Hudson Mohawke and made an excursion to BBC Radio 1. And who knows what more 2013 has in store for her…
