Wu Tang Clan. Gustav Mahler. Klock. Rammstein. Efdemin. Arvo Parth. Dettmann. Aftermath. Put them in a bowl, shake them and out comes a sound which Berlin-based house and techno producer Recondite would consider to call his own. Wow!
November 11 he hit Remedy, Brooklyn NYC. One month later he appeared in the line-up at Berghain’s 8th Birthday Bash, between Rødhåd, Blawan, Evan Baggs and Levon Vincent, to name but a few. And that’s not all. His album On Acid [Acid Test, Absurd Recordings’ sublabel] was named one of the top 20 albums of the year by Resident Advisor’s staff, stating: ‘Recondite has crafted the rare album that is equally meaningful on a confused dance floor and a melancholy morning-after.’ Not bad for a guy who stepped into the major league less than two years ago. Critics have called his work ‘haunting’, ‘dark’, ‘wild-eyed’ but also ‘thoughtfully composed’. Once caught up in the production process Recondite tries to get himself in a meditative mood, while getting rid of all the hardware, thus creating his signature sound: versatile and sophisticated.
Musical influences stretch from 90’s HipHop (Wu Tang Clan) to the stripped down techno by Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock on their Scenario EP. His remix of The Hope for Scuba, Hotflush’s label boss, and his release of DRGN (Hotflush] definitely turned him into a shooting star.
So now you understand why the crew of Les Enfants Terribles is so thrilled to present Recondite (live!) on December 29 at Trouw. Time to get in touch with him.
Berghain’s 8th Birthday Bash must have been awesome!
‘Absolutely! I played my set at 8 o’clock in the morning, started kind of slow and moody and worked my way up to some Recondite techno which will be released on Dystopian in early 2013. It was great because my label mate Rødhåd played downstairs at Berghain right after me. He played both his and my latest track, which I also played at the end of my set upstairs. So the crowd could listen to those tracks both at Panorama Bar and Berghain, which was very big!’
How did Les Enfants Terribles and you come together?
‘They wanted to complete their line-up for the 29th of December and they chose me. It just happened! I learned recently that they have been following me since my very first release.’
Are you familiar with TrouwAmsterdam?
‘To be honest: I don’t know too much about Trouw yet. I talked to Ben Klock and Scuba about it and they said it is one of the best venues in Europe! So I’m on tension like a bow, haha!’
So folks, a new talent is coming to Amsterdam. Seize the opportunity and spread the word. And as we all know: ‘the worst is yet to come..!’
