Let us all thank the kid who pissed off James Murphy while DJing at a punk show in the early 00’s.
James got agitated because the kid had the guts to play his favorite Liquid Liquid and Delta Five records. Rare records that James thought he was DJ-famous for. He got upset and embarrassed, and wrote ‘Losing My Edge’: a song about an aging guy who has seen it all, but is afraid his relevancy has ended. With this song LCD Soundsystem was born, a band that turned James into an unlikely ambassador of cool. The irony wasn’t lost on him.
‘Losing My Edge’ is not only painfully funny, it shows relentless love for music. James sums up more than 50 bands from his eclectic record collection, with gems like Gill Scott-Heron, The Human League and The Sonics. It’s the perfect first song for a band that channeled an encyclopedic knowledge of rock and dance into the best dance-punk ever.
Only a year after James Murphy disbanded LCD Soundsystem, he brings his crate of rare disco cuts, new wave and house records to Trouw. Let’s hope we can catch a glimpse of how it all began while we dance ourselves clean.
