Talking to Tokyo

Talking to Tokyo

18-05-2012 | 13.21

Alex from Tokyo was the fist ever international artist to play Trouw. This was February 27th 2009 at Drukpers to be exact. The always smiling Innervisions artist has made it a tradition to leave his hometown New York City (he has a base in Tokyo too) to come by and play at Trouw annually. During the Trouw on Sunday edition on the 20th of May it's that time of year again. Old friend and owner of Trouw Olaf Boswijk spoke to Alex on Skype about his adventures on biking in Amsterdam, sharkfat headphones and his latest release on Planet E.

Olaf Boswijk
Hey Alex, how is things in Paris?

Alex Prat
It has been great, lots of family time last week, lots of catching up. Work, Phonon, meeting up with friends, the weather is a bit cold though, but everything's good

Olaf Boswijk
Is your next stop Amsterdam or are there other gigs in between?

Alex Prat
Saturday I do Zukunft in Zurich

Olaf Boswijk
aha, with Alex Dallas!

Alex Prat
Yes! It is GOING to be a GREAT week end with all of you!!
What about you?

Olaf Boswijk
We can't wait...it's been too long!

Alex Prat
I know, it is the annual rendez vous!

Olaf Boswijk
I'm good! weather is too cold aswell but very excited about a big weekend coming up and on monday we shoot our annual movie for our Trouw summerstop, there will be some interesting characters and things happening in that one.
What's going on with Phonon? Is all going well for you?

Alex Prat
We are selling in the US, in the NYC area the headphones, they have been getting some very good reviews, we have a cable line and a very nice paper speaker for interior design coming up by the summer, very exciting, things are going well at our pace, trying to expand and spread to the world now, which is pretty challenging without any investment or anything, but it is interesting, trying to find serious audio partners in every country into audio in Europe.

Olaf Boswijk
I must admit I have been very bad and haven't tried it on our soundsystem and cables yet.but I just read in an interview with Kristian (Âme red.) in the Robert Johnson newspaper that Phonon is actually shark fat?

Alex Prat
I need to read that intw then? What did he eat when he said that? Some cactus?

Olaf Boswijk
hahaha, I will show it to you on Sunday! you know Kristian likes vegetables but I'm not sure if he eats cactus. But really, he says it in the interview, so I was seriously thinking last night 'how can shark fat on your cables actually improve your soundsystem?'

Alex Prat
You should probably study that in Tokyo for our next cable line

Olaf Boswijk
I have heard you are the best host ever in Japan and I must admit you were the best host ever in New York too.

Alex Prat
Like you guys! We love to take care of our friends who love shark fat!!

Olaf Boswijk
Hey, how's the new EP doing? and also you just did a remix for Planet E (Carl Craig's label red.) right?

Alex Prat
Great reviews for the Japanese EP, been playing it a lot too and great feedback from the dance floor, the Carl Craig/Psyche remix came out late last year

Olaf Boswijk
is there more coming from Tokyo Black Star soon?

Alex Prat
Another remix for the New York label Let's Play House (Jacques Renault's label) which came out this week which is pretty crazy out there actually, another finished track I am trying to see what to do with but I will definitely play them on Sunday! This great bluesy techno/disco track I am so into we did with Paul Randolph doing his rootsy bluesy vocals. It is called "I cry out your name"

Olaf Boswijk
So Alex, what do you like best about Amsterdam?

Alex Prat
TROUW, the people, the city, the relaxed vibe, the bikes, the centre is very pretty, the quality of life, the music scene for sure, a very good scene, soulful and funky, I so enjoyed last year staying at your place and riding your bike all over town, the kind of global peace village feel I love it.
Everytime I come play I want to stay longer!

Olaf Boswijk
ah yeah, and you bumped into a friend from Tokyo right?

Alex Prat
I did! An old friend of mine from Tokyo, she got married in Amsterdam, she ran a Japanese gallery in the centre, I was watching at all the beautiful tall girls on my bike smiling and then she sreamed at me, I almost ran my bike into a group of old women having coffee on a terrace. Everybody was laughing in the street and I was talking to her in japanese! Hysterical!!

Olaf Boswijk
I want to hear you talking Japanese!
What do you remember from the first time at Trouw? It was actually our opening night and you were the very first international guest.

Alex Prat
That's true! With you!! I was really impressed and nervous too...I started to play and I felt pretty comfortable very fast, I felt again that same vibe from 11, the room is big, but the booth is at the perfect height with the people, the vibe very positive, I had a great time, another great friend of mine from Tokyo was there too, she spent the whole night next to the speakers, I remember playing the Henrik/Stevie Wonder remix in the end, Job smiling...It was still under construction, everyone excited...That track is a TROUW classic for me

Olaf Boswijk
It IS a classic and was played so many times after that.
And I think a lot has changed since then, hopefully for the good :)

Alex Prat
Of course

Olaf Boswijk
okay, I guess I should not take more of your time and let you move on with your things!
Au revoir Alex et a bientôt

Alex Prat
See you on Sunday!

Olaf Boswijk
sunday bloody sunday

Alex Prat
And into Happy Monday!
