Behind the scenes at AAN

Behind the scenes at AAN

24-01-2012 | 11.16

On Wednesday the 25th of January, the new inspiration evening ‘Wie is AAN?’ will take place at De Verdieping. One of the initiators is Arend Wortmann; young cultural entrepreneur, jack-of-all-trades and a production force for De Verdieping. From the start of De Verdieping, Arend has been involved in realizing expositions, interviews and live music. In 2011 he organized the successful fashion show Crème Fresh during the Amsterdam Fashion Week, now he’s back with an evening all about upcoming creative entrepreneurs and their stories. He and Jarl Schulp (De Verdieping) sat around the table and talked about the first edition of ‘Wie is AAN?’

Arend, it maybe a really obvious question, but I’ll ask it anyway: Wie is AAN? (Who is AAN?)
In my eyes, the people who act for what they stand for are AAN. People, who don’t occupy themselves with standards, but take things in their own hands and renew them with success. And never settle with just the average.

Where did this idea come from?
This idea comes from watisaan.nl, a website showing cool spots in Amsterdam described in an awesome manner. We thought, this can also be done with people, but people can’t be described. They have to tell it for themselves, that way it comes across as it should be.

On the 25th of January your first evening will take place at De Verdieping: ‘Wie is AAN?’ What can we expect?
We want our audience to see that there are still opportunities in the creative market; even in these so called times of crises. On January 25 we’ll have 3 guests, all successful entrepreneurs, who will share their stories on how their ideas became the businesses they are at the moment. There will be live music and a few starting entrepreneurs who will pitch their ideas. There is even the possibility to design and print a t-shirt 'live' that evening.

There is enough time that evening to ask questions or just have a chat with our guests. Are you planning on starting your own business or are you an artist in search for tips or new collaborations, I think you will find some inspiration or insight to take with you.

Where do you see AAN in a year? What are your dreams?
In a year? The ideal would be, managing an own breeding place where artists, musicians and other creative people take care of programming their own club/exposition space. Watisaan.nl will be full of reviews, blog posts, pitches and other things that are considered AAN. Also ‘Wie is AAN?’ will have grown into a part of the year schedule of De Verdieping (and we are fully preparing our first evening of the second year, we’ll start with Johan Cruijff and Victor & Rolf *dreaming*)

Is De Verdieping considered AAN?
De Verdieping has filled many Champions League Wednesdays/European League Thursdays with something fun/surprising/inspiring, so in my eyes De Verdieping is considered AAN. I would not be here for so long if it wasn’t 'aan'.
