Data is big! The expectation is that data visualization is going play an increasing role in our daily lives. Just like data visualization superstar Aaron Koblin, known from Radiohead's video 'House of Cards', said: "19th century culture was defined by the novel, 20th century culture by cinema. The culture of the 21st century will be defined by the interface."
The front runners of data visualization, that consist of interaction / web designers, programmers and graphic designers, are providing us with a new perspective on our daily environment through visualization. From real-time animation of the rain in for instance Singapore, to the mapping of taxi routes in the evening or just think of your Facebook / Foursquare activity. Data is all around us and we use it more than we think.
Leader in the field of data visualization is the SENSEable City Lab at MIT. Last month MIT launched the Android app Funf. With this app you can 'capture' your own data (sound, movement, GPS) and use it for different applications on the web. Big Brother stuff, but controlled by you.
It is still unknown what role sharing data and its visualization is going to play in our life, but there is no doubt that it's role will be important. Would you like to know more about this? Come to the movie night on data visualization at De Verdieping on November 29.
