About New Music For Found Footage

24-08-2014 | 19.19

Music for Found Footage is a collaboration between Trouw and CineSonic, with EYE Film Museum as a partner in the first edition. In the forthcoming months, four artists will present their music, created for a selection of short films. Every night, a different artist will be responsible: Tom Trago, Legowelt, Shackleton and Wolfgang Voigt. Tom Trago is the first one up. I spoke with him about music  (or sound) in films and his view on the night in question.

Interview with Motor City Drum Ensemble

21-08-2014 | 10.11

A few years back, a close friend played me a record. It was around the time house was experiencing a well-deserved resurgence in Europe. It re-introduced the genre to its Chicago and Detroit roots while it also explored the deeper bass lines that were left behind from the dubstep era. The track was called Frontin and it was unique to everything else that was around at the time. It still tipped its hat to the origins of dance music, but there was a raw quality that was unrivaled amongst its contemporaries. I was hooked. After inquiring, my friend informed me that German artist Danilo Plessow created Frontin under the guise of Motor City Drum Ensemble, a name that reflects his auto-Industry-home origins of Stuttgart.

This weekend will set the stage for Elias Mazian and Jean Pierre Enfant's first all-nighter in Trouw. Now that's definitely a cause for a celebratory drink and they are: Kir Royale and Takkie!

Interview with Audio Culture

25-07-2014 | 08.14

“When we started really hanging out, before we started the label, it was every single Saturday down at a record store called Killa Cutz, which is sadly gone now – it’s turned into a bike rental shop. We used to go there every Saturday at ten o’clock – that’s when the boxes of promos would arrive – and we’d be in there listening to records all day. That’s where our love for this comes from.”

Interview with Spencer

17-07-2014 | 11.30

As you’ve probably noticed, an interview usually precedes an event at Trouw. We’ve adapted quite well to receiving last minute replies but mere hours before an appearance proved too much for even us. An opportunity to share some of Spencer’s thoughts and experiences doesn’t come along everyday and we’d be fools to resign this one to the wastebasket. So without further delay and in the spirit of better late than never, may we present the Spencer interview.

It's Trouw's Last Summer! Mailing with Marc Piñol

Usually, when an artist wants to do an interview by mail, I try my best to still do it over Skype. For some reason, many Spanish artists are very afraid of their English skills, and think they won’t be able to express themselves fully - in a way that often is correct. On the other hand, an interviewer will never be able to get the most out of a question with an interview by mail, for obvious reasons. Strangely enough, Marc Piñol answered me very blatantly while sitting in front of his computer and gave some beautiful open answers. Below you can read about his affection with pop, his aversion to Sónar and his discontentment with his own productions.

Interview with Mano Le Tough

23-06-2014 | 09.08

House has few secrets left for Mano le Tough. Thanks to his intensive submersion in Berlin’s club culture, it takes more than some random Kerri Chandler rip-off to get him enthusiastic. Mano likes his music fresh and original. As if we weren’t already excited enough to see him play!

Serge interviews DJ Deep

20-06-2014 | 10.09

This coming Friday, Clone boss Serge invited Parisian cult figure DJ Deep to his label night in De Verdieping. Both men go way back to the early days of house and techno. They share a couple of simularities as artists, both also plenty of big differences in their approach. Serge had a chat with DJ Deep (Cyril Etienne) about his past and a good look into the future of his Deeply Rooted label and the status of the Parisian club scene.
