utopian grids
An exhibition by the Design Department of the Sandberg Institute Amsterdam.
On Saturday 26 september, the design department of the Sandberg Institute opens a nine-day public event at ‘de Verdieping’ shedding light on the new structures of urbanisation.
‘Utopian Grids’ will highlight various critical perspectives on contemporary urbanisation, from Google city-building, holiday parks and perfect landscapes to dissapearing city states, military strategies and revolts. The different layers of these dream metropolises will be excavated in films, drawings, installations, books, debates and performances. The exhibition will be comprised of the master’s students’ individual project, five of which are graduation projects.
The Sandberg Institute Amsterdam is the master’s programme at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. The works exhibited here reflect the mentality of the design department, where critical views on the world and sociopolitical engagement are expressed through self-directed practices. The design department will relocate to the downstairs arts space at Trouw’s ‘de Verdieping’ for the duration of the show.
